  • The goal of this project was to recover a $5 million boring machine which was stuck and unable to proceed. The machine was located between the Cedar River and the Renton Airport, 30 feet below the ground surface.

  • Height restrictions at the airport would not allow the installation of sheet piles, and dewatering at this location was not permitted.

Boring machine retrieval from pit.
14-foot-diamter manhole lowered inside frozen soil shoring after boring machine was retrieved.
  • A frozen soil shoring wall was constructed around and below the boring machine to allow its safe retrieval.

  • The frozen soil shoring provided stable walls during excavation and resulted in the successful retrieval of the boring machine. Because it also provided a dry excavation dewatering was not required.

  • During the final phase of the project, the frozen soil shoring was widened to accommodate the placement of a 14-foot-diameter precast concrete vault.
