Frozen-soil shoring system installed around the site.
  • The owner, Public Service Company of Colorado, wanted to build a state-of-the-art railroad-coal-car unloading facility with an integrated radial stacker.

  • Traditional shoring methods were considered and costed, but there were serious concerns about groundwater control.

  • The owner was on the verge of abandoning this project when the general contractor, TIC, contacted us.

Frozen-soil shoring as excavation proceeds.

Lowest slab under construction near vertical frozen-soil shoring wall protected by insulation.
  • A frozen soil shoring wall 500 feet in length was installed around the T-shaped site in wet sand, gravel, cobbles, and moving water.

  • The wall was designed to a thickness of 4 feet and a depth of 33 feet to resist the 24 feet of hydrostatic pressure against the 26-foot excavation.

  • Groundwater was held at a level below the bottom of the excavation with the support of a few sump pumps.
